February Local History Speaker Series: Mostly True: A Unique History of Oshawa in Art

With whimsical characters and tales both true and tall, the Eric Sangwine art collection at the Oshawa Museum is a unique showcase of Oshawa’s history. On February 20, local artist Eric Sangwine joins the Local History Speaker Series to talk about his collection of artwork, now numbering over 100 pieces, each highlighting stories, people, legends, and lore from Oshawa’s history.

February’s Local History Speaker Series is taking place Tuesday, February 20 at 6PM. The Speaker Series will be held at the McLaughlin Branch of the Oshawa Public Libraries, in the lower level auditorium, located at 65 Bagot Street, Oshawa.

January Local History Speaker Series: Oshawa & Electric Rail

Thanks to its deep-water port, two 400 series highways, and connections to the Canadian National, Canadian Pacific, and GO railways, many transportation routes carrying a diverse range of vehicles run through Oshawa today. However, one mode of transportation no longer found in Oshawa is electric rail. Drawing upon his work with the Oshawa Museum and the research for his Masters Research Paper, Adam Arko’s talk will outline the history of electric rail in Oshawa. It will start with the local electric railway which once serviced Oshawa. It will then detail a bizarre scheme to establish an electric commuter line between Oshawa and Toronto during the 1910s, as well as a proposal for an electric GO Train connected directly to downtown Oshawa. The talk will conclude with a very brief look at the prospect of electric rail returning to Oshawa in the future.

November’s Local History Speaker Series: Movie Night – Unarchived

For the final Local History Speaker Series of 2023, we are hosting a movie night, screening the National Film Board of Canada Documentary, Unarchived.

In community archives across British Columbia, local knowledge keepers are hand-fashioning a more inclusive history. Through a collage of personal interviews, archival footage and deeply rooted memories, the past, present and future come together, fighting for a space where everyone is seen and everyone belongs. History is what we all make of it.
