April Speaker Series – The Ward Uncovered

On April 19, the OHS is pleased to welcome Dr. Holly Martelle, Principal Archaeologist and Planner at Timmins Martelle Heritage Consultants Inc. for The Ward Uncovered: Archaeological Investigations of one of Toronto’s First Arrival Communities. This talk will provide an overview of archaeological investigations that were undertaken in 2015 in downtown Toronto on the site of a multi-ethnic 19th and 20th century neighbourhood. The excavations revealed the foundations of the British Methodist Episcopal Church, representing the third Black congregation church in the City of Toronto, as well as numerous early Black settler sites. Emphasis will also be given to how archaeology can help tell the story of marginalized communities and the power of artifacts in heritage interpretation and story telling.

The Speaker Series is taking place on Tuesday, April 19 at 7pm, hosted on Zoom. The event is free to attend, but donations are kindly accepted (suggested $5/person).
